Acupuncture Consultation + Treatment
The first session is both our initial consultation and a treatment, and this can last up to 3 hours. The initial session takes more time because I will take an in depth case history and we will speak about what's brought you for treatment.

Acupuncture Follow up

Follow up sessions are usually 75 minutes but can vary in duration as the treatment is responsive to what is needed in the moment. The duration of the treatment and the number of needles used is not a measure of the strength of the treatment.

About me

I have always been curious about, and fascinated by, bodies and the strange and mysterious situation of being alive and embodied. For many years I have been learning myself through different kinds of bodywork, gathering information through touch and internal sensation - a growing embodied awareness that supported me to begin reading body systems.

I came to studying acupuncture after incorporating it into my artistic practice and working with acupuncturists. The largest acupuncture project I worked on was setting up a free community acupuncture clinic in a museum as part of an exhibition. I realised I was in a position of advocacy for this medicine, and that this was something I felt strongly about - access to alternative, holistic healthcare that invites people to be in connected relationship to their embodied experience.

Part of what I was seeking when I began to study acupuncture was a theoretical and practical connection to ancient ways of seeing and understanding bodies, and our experience of being alive in a world.

As a black person born in the UK, part of a diaspora, with a lineage broken by the transatlantic slave trade, I feel this break from ancient knowledges keenly. I think about what it means for me to step into such a lineage, how to honour the people and places that this knowledge has moved through and been formed by, and how to receive it all, in my body, in my context. Which inevitably invites a kind of transformation.

TRAINING & APPROACH

When I began my acupuncture training I had no idea about the different lineages and styles of acupuncture, I began studying TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and I went on to train in Five-Element Acupuncture where I found more of an immediate resonance with the approach.

The lineage of Five-Element acupuncture that I studied came through a British practitioner and his accumulated knowledges from teachings he received around Asia, which he brought to the UK in the 1970s. The classical texts on acupuncture draw on Daoist philosophies which inform this system of medicine. The theory and practice stems from observation of cyclical change and transformation in the environment, and the influence of this on our embodiment and experience.

I understand symptoms to be expressions of our experiences, our relationship to environment (social, architectural, psychic, natural) and expressions of things we've inherited.

This modality asks the practitioner to tune in to disharmony in our experience, in order to bring things into greater harmony through holistic address. In the treatment room, I listen and reflect back things I hear, see, feel and receive from someone through needling acupuncture points and connecting with meridian networks. I understand this to be a process of reminding, of affirming, of encouraging and of amplifying the things our bodies already know and inviting (re)connection with our capacities for self-healing.

Frequently asked questions

  • Acupuncture works through the insertion of very fine needles into acupuncture points which are precise locations that can be accessed all over our bodies. The channels or meridians are pathways that describe relationships between these points. Needling encourages energy to flow where perhaps it has become stagnant or stuck.

Symptoms often present as manifestations of mental or emotional distress, or as a response to an accumulation of compromising experiences. Acupuncture supports in a holistic way, the points speak to us on physical, emotional and spiritual levels, reminding our bodies of their self-healing mechanisms.

The effects of treatment are cumulative and as well as supporting with presenting symptoms, acupuncture is a preventative medicine and can be incorporated into regular rhythms and routines of caring for yourself. You can incorporate  acupuncture into a treatment plan that involves biomedicine medicine and other kinds of healthcare.

  • The first session is both our initial consultation and a treatment, and this can last up to 3 hours. The initial session takes more time because I will take an in depth case history and we will speak about what's brought you for treatment. Follow up sessions are usually 75 minutes but can vary in duration as the treatment is responsive to what is needed in the moment. The duration of the treatment and the number of needles used is not a measure of the strength of the treatment.

Each session we take time for feedback, to hear how your experience has been since our last session and this noticing and listening is an important part of understanding how best to work together and informs your treatment plan; like any relationship, we will be getting to know each other.

Multiple times across each session I will take your pulses by holding your hand as you lay down on the massage table and feeling the pulses around your wrist with my other hand. This gives me further information about the treatment needed.

The most commonly used acupuncture points are located on the legs (below the knee) and feet, and the arms (below the elbow) and hands. The needling technique used most often in Five-Element acupuncture is to insert, turn and then remove the needle, with only a brief moment of physical interaction, I find that this needling style can be a confronting provocation. Describing sensation, describing things we can’t see, articulating around our internal experience can feel difficult and I think that any language (descriptive, metaphorical, image-based) is useful in this attempt. We both experience energetic sensation whilst needling and the way that it feels to both of us is useful information!

  • Everyone experiences treatment differently. Some people describe treatment to be very subtle, others experience it as being intense. It can vary on different days. Some people feel transformative changes immediately, others don’t notice specific changes beyond feeling a little better which can for them be enough to come back. One of the changes I noticed with starting Five Element acupuncture treatment was that I found it easier to navigate different places; I used to get lost a lot in new places, and feel quite distressed about it, and I noticed that this really eased and I had better recall on routes. We all resonate differently and there are so many factors which affect how we might receive treatment like nervousness, sense of openness to the practitioner, dehydration, rushing, medication, timing…

  • When I am needled I sometimes feel my energy returning like a drip slowly flowing through my body along narrow pathways and eventually making me feel solid and present again. Sometimes I feel the energy in the point being kicked up like a sandstorm in a tiny cavern, I feel that energy journey through my body in different directions, clearing space, reintegrating parts of me that I might feel directly in my viscera or energetically in my being or in my emotions. I feel myself arrive in my centre. Sometimes I experience this as a jolt, sometimes a slow and hazy settling downwards, sometimes other things. I feel connected to the centrality, dimensionality and breathy liveness of my spine, and I feel something like my mind and my eyes dropping down into my heart. Through treatment I learn these inner pathways, witnessing the movement of energy, water, blood, muscle, tissue, thought, and the different ways this affects my emotion, my posture, the ways that I hold my face, the ways that it feels to look at a person in the eyes, my digestion, my sleep, my relationships…and through these experiences and sensations I come into more intimate relationship with myself.

  • I would usually recommend coming for weekly treatments for 4-6 consecutive weeks, then moving to a fortnightly, then monthly, then seasonally or in times of crisis. The intention is to support your system’s flow and resilience, not to have you coming back every week. Some people will come for treatment regularly - every month or every six weeks - and others will come whenever they feel they need some additional support. This might not be the same for every person and my specific recommendation will be in dialogue with your particular needs and circumstances.

  • Something that comes up fairly often when speaking to people about their experiences of treatment is that they aren't quite sure what exactly has made the change - was it the acupuncture, the dietary changes, the diagnosis, the break up, the herbal treatments, the new job, the change in season, the realisation, or the time? When something doesn't feel right or good and we want to change it, we often try many things at once, one thing we try often suggests another which can make it hard to feel clear about ‘what worked’. One change or experience can be a portal for a cascade of change.

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice used as preventative medicine and to treat physical and spiritual symptoms of disharmony. The fact that it has persisted over time is a testament to its efficacy. The intention of treatment is not to fix or cure but to tend to the underlying issue that may be causing imbalance in your system.

TESTIMONIALS

After my first six sessions with Jamila (and first acupuncture ever), I felt completely re-balanced. They created such a welcoming environment and made me feel at ease right away. It’s rare to find someone who listens so deeply to both your words and your body. I cannot wait to continue!

  • A.

Having received acupuncture for many years, across a wide range of practitioners and clinical settings, I feel I have developed a refined sensitivity to the depth, integrity, and attentiveness that this work can hold. My experience with Jamila goes beyond any I have encountered before. Each treatment feels meticulously and intuitively composed.

Jamila holds an extensive wisdom of what I can only describe as the dancing body - a living, moving field of rhythms, histories, and emergent expressions. They read the body not as a static structure of symptoms, but as choreography: where energy hesitates, where it overreaches, where it has forgotten. This sensitivity allows them to meet pain, depletion, or emotional holding not as isolated problems, but as gestures within a larger somatic story seeking resolution.

A bespoke clinic experience: one that feels informed, spacious, and reverent toward the complexity of the body-spirit continuum. Jamila meets us with a level of precision and care that is both rare and transformative. Highly recommend.

  • N.

I began acupuncture with Jamila to boost my immunity following a period of illness. Also to alleviate stress symptoms that frequently bring on bouts of insomnia.

Jamila has always created an ambience where relaxation has felt easy as well as the in-depth discussion of symptoms. They are meticulous when asking questions and sessions always feel unhurried.

I have had acupuncture in the past with other practitioners and it has been a little more painful and tense. Jamila definitely understands how to minimise discomfort.

I’ve always really enjoyed my sessions and have been going back approximately once a month. It’s definitely helped me to feel stronger and more balanced. I only wished I had started treatment earlier. In the meantime, I would definitely recommend Jamila I believe that the work they are doing is highly beneficial to my well-being.

  • A.

When I went to see Jamila I was in the midst of seismic change in my life. I was trying to find my way through a profound bereavement. I was having to pack up and move from my home and workplace of many years.

I was feeling over exhausted and strained, running out of energy to find my way, depleted by the fight or flight chemicals that were never meant to be long term aids. My body felt tired and brittle with over exertion. My head, neck, shoulders and back were tight with all the bracing to deal with all the immediate and urgent demands. I was overwhelmed.

I cannot overstate how much Jamila helped at this time. They created an environment of quiet calm and trust. I felt entirely safe and held. It was the most mysterious process. Somehow the sensitive attuning, the steady and responsive interventions broke up the concrete in my body. The energies that were trapped beneath were brought into flow. At one point I felt a wave of energy, like water,  move through my entire body from head to feet. It was a relief. I felt somehow reset.

After the first session I had intended to go walking through the city but, instead, I had to go home where I slept and slept and dreamed deeply. The next day I felt so rested.

After a few sessions with Jamila I felt like nutrients and energy were moving through me again. It was at that time a quiet and much needed miracle. I felt supported in the most real way and it helped me to proceed.

I fully intend to return regularly. Thank you, Jamila, for your deep attunement, responsivity and skill. You helped me through a very tough time. I very much look forward to next time.
